If you have ever played golf you know that one of the most important aspects, aside from having fun, is keeping track of your score. As a new player seeing the score getting worse or just having a bad day can be very demotivating.
This is where Emotional Design comes in to help to try to bring joy and confidence to the game.
During this project, I took a solution that was very technical and confusing and turned it into something that helps the player while they are on the course and brings confidence to their game.

Backstory
Backstory
After getting the assignment for the Emotional Design course my first idea was to choose some calculator apps because they are most of the time very technical and single-use.
Then I remembered, that I had begun playing golf the year before and the app used there was not the best. Even to the point that I used my phone's notification app to write down the score as I was advancing on the course. This needed a better solution!

The problem and the scope
The problem and the scope
The first thing was to choose a scope. The app (GolfBox) I used for golf had many features, including booking a lesson or a time slot on the course, seeing your scoreboard, calendar, news, and more.
After looking them over I decided to go with the Scorecard. This is a thing you should use to see your progress and move up in overall ranking(HCP). Due to time constraints and weather on the course, adding your score should be as easy as possible.
The current app is very technical with a lot of steps in different menus. Thus the main emotions it brings up are confusion, overwhelm, and anxiety.
The first thing you have to do is set up the game which includes choosing a golf club and adding the players. After that begins the part you should do on the course as you play - filling in the Scorecard.
That process currently has many little steps and too much information. You have to add each score separately without automatically moving to the next one that has been entered. While advancing on the course you receive no feedback. Is the score better than the previous one or my average? Did I improve or not? These are the things I decided to work on.

The first thing to do is map out the user journey on the existing app. What are the current activities, what happens after them, and which emotions do they evoke? This helps you see the whole process. What aspects of the Scorecard need improvement, new features to add, and where to add emotions?
Alongside that, I defined the main aspects of the app. Who is the audience, what are their technical skills, and where the app is mainly used? Based on the material I had until that point I chose my core emotions to add to the new solutions: Confidence, Clarity, and Self-awareness.
After the analysis of the problem had been done I came up with a research question and design principles. The question I wanted my new app to answer was… How to engage golfers to be more self-aware about their progress?

The redesigned solution tries to bring more clarity to the process by giving the user as much information as necessary but as little as needed.
Based on the user's location on the course, guidance can be shown on the app by pointing you in the direction of the next hole and giving helpful tips about your game and the course.
After finishing your play, statistical information is used to help you keep track of your overall progress.

Additionally, I included badges to be gained based on your progress.
There is no list to see which ones you have left to receive rather just what you have gotten to not bring additional dissatisfaction. Once a badge is achieved it can be shared with your friends or fellow golfers who in turn can react to it.
Once the whole course is finished you again get some helpful statistics and can see your last score to see if you have improved.

One thing that came out almost immediately was automation and smart solutions on the course. Smart golf balls that have trackers inside which can be linked to your phone. Also, a tracker at the end of each hole can point you in the direction of the next one.
Based on that the app could become more of a personal trainer instead of a task that needs to be done. It could read your score automatically, give you information about your swing based on where the ball was hit and how far it landed, and show a detailed overview of your entire progress on one particular day or overall.
