Life Insurance is probably one of those things that will never be popular or cool, but that does not mean there is not any value in it.
In this project, I try to find a way of making life insurance package decisions as simple and clear as possible. Young people often live less dangerously and have fewer responsibilities so they see no need for it.
Is Life Insurance for you and what package to choose? This is the problem I started to work with and in the end designed a solution for.

This was my first big project with a partner. To my and my classmates' surprise, it was a Life Insurance provider. Although not excited in the beginning we got to work, gathering information, doing interviews, desk research, and mystery shopping to name a few. All that to get as much info as possible and hopefully find some problematic topics/aspects to tackle with.
In the end, we had a list of possible pain points and everyone got to ideating. Some politics was needed to decide who gets what but after that all of us had a concept to work on and needed to provide a solution that solves a problem and brings value to the partner.

The problem and scope
The problem and scope
The problem that I found and got to focus on was part of the onboarding process of new customers. How to give users the tools to understand if life insurance is for them and if so what package should they get?
The current solution had a lot of information. Long PDFs about the terms and conditions, available options and extras, and questionnaires to understand what is your lifestyle and whether you are at risk. On top of that, you could not sign up online meaning you'd have to contact the company to get yourself life insurance.
Based on the user research and interviews we found some interesting questions to try to find answers for, like what is the best package for me and how much should I pay. Combined with the desk research where we found, that about 20 percent of Estonians thought Life Insurance was too expensive and about 10 percent found no suitable offer, then it was clear we needed to come up with a solution that could help with those pain points.
Those were the things that I started to work with. Come up with a solution that would give the user a clear answer if and what they need while having the least amount of steps necessary. Thus came the research question, how to improve the initial touchpoint for clients looking for Life Insurance?

The first thing I needed was the initial questions asked from the people signing up. Based on those I could decide which were the most crucial and which not, but as I got to work I thought if that was even necessary. Instead, maybe I could come up with different customer/user profiles. Thus I won't need to ask a long list of medical questions.
The next step was coming up with focus groups for the packages based on age and then finding relevant questions. Due to the persona I had, I only came up with a solution for that age group.
Before the questions, I came up with relevant packages. That was to make sure each question was necessary for that group. After that, I started to come up with questions inspired by the existing questionnaire and the minimum info the company needed. In this process, I used the help of AI and the research that myself and the team had done before.
For the end prototype, I used to same style as the existing product and got to test them on a few people with generally positive feedback while adding minor changes.

The redesigned solution tries to make the process of choosing a Life Insurance package as easy as possible no matter your background or needs.
With up to ten quick-to-answer questions the users can get the results fast. If the proposed packages are not for you then you have the option to put together your own or not even choose one at all if you understand this product is not for you.

From a visual perspective, it keeps the original style language but adds clear inputs and selections so everything on the screen is easily understandable, thus eliminating additional sources spent on communication or helping customers answer questions.
This solution helps people who are interested in Life Insurance to find out if this product is for them and what would an ideal package look like.

For the future of this project, further user testing should be conducted to validate the right questions for calculating the packages for new users. As found during the project the idea I came up with works on its core but as far as school projects go, you never have enough time to do every step. At least not as thoroughly as necessary.
