How can companies monitor their ecological footprint and why should they do it?
In this collaboration project, I work with a company offering CO2 calculator for business. This was a field I had no prior knowledge about and it seemed like there isn't an end to the amount of info one can gather.
After the research, I focused on improving the experience of the calculator itself by bringing more clear focus and clearing up the interface.

With this project, we had the opportunity to work with a start-up, Sustaxo.
The scope of the project was to improve the onboarding of customers and I with two fellow students dug right into that. We looked at competitors, did research about the topic in general, looked into legislation in both Estonian and the EU, and did user interviews with businesses that had already done the calculations and with some that hadn't or had not finished the process.
In the end, we found five pain points and after consulting with the partner we decided to focus on three of them. Mine ended up being how to bring clarity to the calculator/form.

The problem and scope
The problem and scope
To bring clarity to the form I needed to first understand why something is asked of the user and what is the wording. Is every part of the information needed or could some of it come automatically?
This problem occurred because companies were either missing some data that was asked, they didn't understand why something was asked or they just didn't have the correct scope. It's very hard to know the exact amount of heating used in a rental space when all you get is a bill based on retail floor size.
My goal was to use the best practices available and update the form's UI/UX so customers could have a better experience and get more value from filling it out. As an additional step, I looked into bringing automation to where it is possible.

The first thing I added to the form was a clear indication of the number of steps there are and which one is active and which is missing info. This gives the user a good overview of the process and offers better time management.
Secondly, I added notes and hints to where it was needed. Users had to find all the necessary info on their while in most cases a clear indication could have been given as to where the necessary info is.
The final big thing was adding more flexibility. A retail store chain wants to calculate the CO2 impact of the whole company but also per store. This gives a better overview of what parts of the business work better and what parts need improvement.
On top of those just mentioned I added further small changes to enhance the experience. For example, giving an option to not make a user fill in the form, eliminating the need to save after each step, and removing fields that are unnecessary or could be automized.

The redesigned solution tries to make the customers' lives easier by giving more options to narrow down the scope of measurement. Better visual cues and improved structure have been added to bring more clarity and further simplification.
Users now have a clear overview of what steps need to be taken and after starting to fill in the form get an understanding of the process.

Companies can now measure their CO2 quicker and easier without needing to look for every piece of information based on their knowledge.
Much information related to the company doing the evaluation can be received from the government, thus removing the need to know the amount of employees, revenue etc

Next would be to implement some of the changes and see users' responses. One of the main things the research found is that small and medium-sized companies don't always have the incentive to calculate their CO2. It is not necessary for their day-to-day business and is more of a niche thing. Tech sector is a role model here where it is easier to fill in and monitor.
